Virgin Media O2 Launches UK D2D Satellite Service with Starlink

Virgin Media O2 becomes first UK and European operator to launch direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity.

Virgin Media O2 has switched on O2 Satellite, a new satellite-to-mobile service powered by Starlink Direct to Cell, making the UK the first country in Europe with live direct-to-device satellite mobile data services.

The launch expands O2’s coverage from 89% to 95% of UK landmass, adding connectivity across remote “not-spot” areas equivalent to roughly two-thirds the size of Wales. Customers connect automatically when terrestrial signals are unavailable.

At launch, the service supports:

  • Messaging and mobile data via apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Google Maps and others

  • Backup connectivity during rare local network outages

  • Initial device support for Samsung Galaxy S25 series phones, with more devices planned

O2 Satellite is available as a £3/month bolt-on for O2 Pay Monthly customers and will be included at no extra cost for Ultimate Plan users in future.
