SES and Africa Mobile Network Expand Rural Coverage with Satellite to Connect 5.8m in DRC
SES and Africa Mobile Network (AMN) announced a major rural connectivity milestone in the DRC, supporting over 1,100 base stations and expanding mobile coverage by 27%, bringing access to more than 5.8 million people.
The partners deployed 292 new mobile sites in 90 days, using satellite backhaul and solar-powered infrastructure to reach remote areas without fibre or grid power.
AMN says the rollout includes connectivity to around 1.3 million additional rural users, enabled by its multi-technology radio node supporting 2G, 3G, 4G and future 5G on a single platform.
The deployment leverages SES’s multi-orbit satellite network (GEO, MEO and LEO) to provide telecom service in hard-to-reach regions, supporting rural access to healthcare, education, banking and local commerce.
