Vodafone & AST SpaceMobile Launch European Operator-Focused D2D Satellite Provider
Satellite Connect Europe has formally launched as a new Luxembourg-based company focused on delivering direct-to-device (D2D) satellite broadband for European mobile network operators. The venture which was first introduced in 2025 as a joint initiative between Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile is now moving into deployment mode.
The company says it will operate as an open-access platform for MNOs, allowing operators to extend coverage beyond terrestrial networks without requiring customers to change handsets or install new software. Ground infrastructure is already being rolled out, with builds underway in Spain and the UK and three further locations in planning.
A new leadership team has been announced, including former AT&T international executive John Slamecka as incoming chairman and Meredith Sharples as managing director, alongside senior hires in finance, legal and commercial roles.
Satellite Connect Europe positions itself as a European-controlled layer sitting between operators and satellite infrastructure, keeping network operations and data handling within European jurisdiction while using AST SpaceMobile’s LEO constellation technology.
