T-Mobile’s T-Satellite Uses Starlink to Target Coverage Gaps for Apps
Just two months after launching T-Satellite with Starlink, T-Mobile has expanded the service from text-only to make apps satellite-powered. Customers can now use WhatsApp, AllTrails, AccuWeather, Google Maps, X, and other core tools in places where no cell tower reaches.
The update is powered by Starlink’s 650+ Direct-to-Cell satellites, giving smartphones basic app-level data connectivity anywhere with a clear view of the sky. This means live WhatsApp calls, real-time weather alerts, GPS navigation, and even social updates are now possible off the grid.
T-Mobile says the move has clear safety and business benefits, citing stories of T-Satellite already aiding rescues. The new expansion includes support for consumer apps like CalTopo and onX for outdoor explorers, as well as enterprise apps such as Dialpad, FLORIAN, and T-Mobile Direct Connect for field teams and first responders.
For most users, there’s no change in behavior; phones will connect automatically when terrestrial coverage drops. The service is included on T-Mobile’s top plans, while customers of other U.S. carriers can access it for $10 per month.
With this expansion, T-Mobile is pushing satellite-to-phone connectivity from emergency-only into everyday utility, a step toward making space-enabled coverage part of the standard mobile experience.
