Skylo and Space42 Bring 3GPP-Based D2D Connectivity to Thuraya-4

Skylo Technologies and Space42 have announced a partnership to deliver standards-based Direct-to-Device (D2D) connectivity over Space 42’s Thuraya-4 geostationary satellite, with the service now technically ready for commercial rollout.

The integration combines Skylo’s 3GPP-compliant NTN platform with Thuraya-4, enabling devices to connect using existing SIM credentials and operator core networks. The companies said they have already completed a live, bi-directional voice call over the system without requiring any hardware modifications, confirming end-to-end functionality.

For operators, the approach allows satellite connectivity to be added as an extension of existing networks rather than as a separate layer. Devices authenticate and operate within the same framework used for terrestrial services, while coverage is expanded into areas such as maritime zones and remote regions where cellular infrastructure is unavailable.

The deployment will begin across Thuraya-4’s footprint, which spans more than 100 countries, with rollout dependent on regulatory approvals and operator agreements in each market.

The partnership builds on Thuraya-4’s broader positioning as an integrated connectivity platform, adding native support for D2D services alongside its existing mobile satellite capabilities. For Skylo, it extends its NTN footprint into GEO-based infrastructure, complementing its work with mobile operators and device ecosystems.
