Ofcom: UK to Enable Satellite Calls on Standard Smartphones

The UK is set to become the first country in Europe to allow standard smartphones to make satellite calls, thanks to groundbreaking direct-to-device technology. Ofcom's new proposals would let mobile networks and satellite operators connect users in hard-to-reach areas, providing calls, texts, and internet access where traditional mobile networks can't reach.

This move aims to bridge connectivity gaps, especially in rural and remote locations, including mountains, coastal waters, and during power outages. The move could eventually lead to nationwide mobile coverage, including back-up communication during emergencies. If approved, direct satellite connectivity could roll out as early as this year, marking a significant leap in mobile technology.
