ITRI Launches Multi-Orbit 5G NTN Trials with Partners

ITRI, in collaboration with Eutelsat, MediaTek, Airbus, and Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), has successfully demonstrated 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technology using both Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary (GEO) satellites. The pioneering trials utilised 3GPP Release 17 specifications, marking a significant breakthrough in multi-orbit 5G NTN integration.

In the LEO trial, a MediaTek-powered 5G terminal connected to an ITRI NTN gNB via Eutelsat OneWeb satellites, while the GEO trial featured a bi-directional video call over CHT’s ST-2 satellite. These successful demonstrations lay the foundation for seamless interoperability between satellite and terrestrial networks, bringing us closer to commercial 5G broadband satellite access and opening new markets in smartphones, IoT, and automotive industries.
