Nxgsat Raises €1.2M to Build Virtual 5G Modem for Multi-Orbit Connectivity

Belgian startup Nxgsat has raised €1.2 million in seed funding to develop a virtual 5G modem designed for multi-orbit satellite networks and seamless integration with terrestrial 5G infrastructure.

Led by satellite networking veterans Frederik Simoens and Alain Rolle (both formerly of ST Engineering iDirect), Nxgsat aims to replace today’s proprietary satellite modems with a hardware-agnostic, 3GPP-compliant solution built on the 5G NR Non-Terrestrial Network (NR NTN) standard.

By running on commercial off-the-shelf hardware or directly within flat-panel antennas, Nxgsat’s software-defined modem will let users roam across satellite and terrestrial providers, a major shift from today’s closed systems.

The startup’s open-standard approach could help unify space and telecom infrastructure while supporting Europe’s ambitions for sovereign, multi-orbit broadband under the IRIS² program.

Nxgsat plans a commercial release in Q2 2026, following this initial funding round led by PMV and Imec.istart Future Fund.
