LG Innotek Launches World-First 3rd Gen 5G Satcom Module for Vehicles
LG Innotek has unveiled a major leap in vehicle connectivity: the world’s first 3rd Generation 5G communication module for cars that supports broadband satellite communication (NR-NTN). Unlike earlier narrowband solutions, this new module enables real-time voice and video data transmission at speeds of tens of Mbps, even in remote or disaster-hit areas where terrestrial networks can’t reach.
Built on the latest 3GPP Release 17 standard, the module is optimized for Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), boosting autonomous driving with more accurate satellite-based positioning and seamless over-the-air software updates.
Set for mass production in early 2025, the module is already being pitched to automakers in North America and Japan. LG Innotek says it expects the vehicle 5G module market to grow to 75 million units by 2032, and plans to make this breakthrough a core driver of its trillion-won automotive electronics business.
