Omnispace, Gatehouse Satcom, and Nordic Demo 5G NB-IoT via Non-GEO Satellite

Omnispace, together with Gatehouse Satcom and Nordic Semiconductor, has successfully demonstrated 5G narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) connectivity over a non-geostationary (NGSO) S-band satellite — a major step toward seamless, global 5G IoT coverage.

The test used Omnispace’s F2 satellite, Gatehouse Satcom’s NTN NodeB software, and Nordic’s ultra-compact, low-power nRF9151 module. Five terminals successfully transmitted and received data, showcasing the potential of satellite-enabled NB-IoT using 3GPP-compliant standards.

This milestone highlights the viability of low-power IoT devices connecting via NGSO satellite networks, paving the way for robust applications in remote asset tracking, smart agriculture, infrastructure monitoring, and more.

“This is a key step in realizing globally integrated 5G communications,” said Omnispace CEO Ram Viswanathan.
