FCC Moves to Accelerate Satellite Innovation

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has opened a formal proceeding to modernize decades-old spectrum sharing rules, targeting Ku- and Ka-band frequencies vital to next-generation satellite broadband. These bands are essential to low-Earth orbit (LEO) constellations that deliver high-speed, low-latency internet, particularly to rural and underserved areas.

FCC 25-23, adopted on April 28, 2025, aims to eliminate outdated power restrictions and technical limitations written in the 1990s, which the FCC says are now impeding commercial satellite capabilities. The update is expected to unlock more intensive and efficient spectrum use, reinforcing U.S. economic and national security interests while enhancing coverage, capacity, and performance of satellite systems.
