ECC Approves LoRa Alliance Satellite Framework

The Electronic Communications Committee (ECC) of CEPT has officially established a regulatory framework for satellite-to-low-power device (LPD-S) communications in the 862–870 MHz SRD band. This milestone paves the way for LoRaWAN®-based satellite IoT solutions across Europe.

The decision, which follows several years of advocacy from the LoRa Alliance, supports the integration of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) with low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs). It enables satellite connectivity for use cases like agriculture, logistics, remote monitoring, and environmental data collection.

Key points:

  • Harmonized use of the 862–870 MHz band for satellite-LPD-S links.

  • Ensures coexistence with terrestrial short-range devices.

  • Unlocks remote IoT coverage without the need for terrestrial infrastructure.

The LoRa Alliance hailed the ECC’s decision as a foundational step for scaling low-power satellite IoT across Europe and beyond.
