AST SpaceMobile Acquires Global S-Band Spectrum Rights

AST SpaceMobile has announced an agreement to acquire global S-Band spectrum priority rights under the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), marking a major strategic move to expand its space-based cellular broadband services. The transaction, valued at $64.5 million, will enhance the company’s ability to offer direct-to-smartphone broadband in additional markets using up to 60 MHz of mid-band satellite spectrum in the 1980–2010 MHz and 2170–2200 MHz ranges.

The acquisition supports AST’s broader 3GPP spectrum strategy and future L-Band deployments in the U.S. and Canada, positioning the company to deliver peak data speeds of up to 120 Mbps directly from space—no special devices required.

The deal is expected to close in H2 2025, pending customary conditions and performance milestones. AST plans to use the spectrum in partnership with mobile operators to deliver a true global broadband experience to everyday users and government clients.
