Starlink in Talks to Trial Direct-to-Cell Service in Malaysia

Starlink is in talks with Malaysia’s Ministry of Communications to trial its direct-to-device satellite connectivity service, as the country explores new ways to extend mobile broadband coverage into underserved areas.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said Starlink representatives had briefed the government on plans to test direct-to-device, or direct-to-cell, technology in Malaysia. The service would allow compatible mobile phones to connect directly to satellites in areas beyond the reach of terrestrial mobile networks.

Malaysia’s communications regulator, the MCMC, has been asked to invite local telecom operators to meet with Starlink and explore potential deployment opportunities. The government is positioning the technology as a complement to existing mobile networks, particularly where new towers are not cost-effective or economically viable.

The trial could also support connectivity along highways. Fahmi made the comments during an MoU exchange between the MCMC and the Malaysian Highway Authority, which is working on improved telecom infrastructure for smart traffic management and road safety systems.
