Smart and Lynk Global Complete Philippines’ First D2D Satellite Data Test
Smart Communications, the wireless arm of Philippine mobile operator PLDT, has successfully completed a direct-to-device (D2D) satellite pilot with tech partner Lynk Global, marking the first confirmed satellite-based data download using standard mobile phones in the country.
The trial took place in Catanduanes, a remote island province frequently affected by typhoons and difficult terrain. Using Lynk’s LEO satellites, the teams demonstrated two-way SMS between Catanduanes and Metro Manila, local island-to-island messaging, and basic data access (including web browsing), all without terrestrial cellular coverage.
The pilot validates 3GPP-aligned satellite-to-mobile capabilities as a practical extension of Smart’s nationwide network, targeting the final few percent of population and geography beyond reach of cell towers. While current functionality is limited to messaging and light data, both companies confirmed a roadmap toward full data services as Lynk’s constellation expands.
Smart said additional trials are planned across wider geographies and use cases, including maritime routes, ahead of a commercial launch targeted for 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. The operator highlighted disaster response and resilience as key drivers, positioning D2D satellite as a rapid-restore layer when terrestrial infrastructure is damaged or unavailable.
