Satellite Connect Europe Bags Telefónica and Orange Deals in MWC D2D Push

Satellite Connect Europe has continued its busy MWC opening day, with both Telefónica and Orange announcing new collaborations focused on direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity, reinforcing the growing shift toward hybrid terrestrial–satellite mobile networks across the region.

Telefónica confirmed it is engaging with the Luxembourg-based venture to explore how satellite D2D services could integrate with its existing 4G and 5G networks in Spain and Germany. The work will focus on evaluating technical models and use cases where satellite links could complement terrestrial coverage, particularly in remote areas or during exceptional situations, while maintaining an operator-controlled customer experience.

Orange, meanwhile, has signed a memorandum of understanding with AST SpaceMobile and Satellite Connect Europe. The operator plans to run demonstrations in Romania in the second half of 2026 covering voice, SMS and data services, as it explores deeper integration of D2D connectivity into its core network. The move builds on Orange’s earlier launch of “Satellite Message” in France and aligns with its wider strategy to provide always-available connectivity through a mix of terrestrial and satellite infrastructure.

Taken together, the announcements highlight Satellite Connect Europe’s growing role as a European-focused gateway to AST SpaceMobile’s D2D network. Rather than replacing mobile operators, the model positions satellite as a complementary coverage layer helping MNOs close remaining coverage gaps, strengthen resilience and maintain service continuity while keeping operations within European regulatory frameworks.
