OQ Technology Unveils MACSAT 2.0 D2D 5G NTN Mission

Luxembourg-based OQ Technology has announced MACSAT 2.0, a groundbreaking direct-to-mobile 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) mission aimed at enabling SMS and emergency broadcast services via satellite.

Backed by the Government of Luxembourg through the LuxIMPULSE program and managed by the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA) in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), the mission positions OQ Technology as the first European operator to address the 3GPP-standardized direct-to-smartphone market—until now dominated by U.S. players.

Building on the success of its MACSAT 1.0 mission, OQ is developing 5G New Radio (NR) capabilities in LEO, with flexible beamforming for enhanced coverage. The mission aims to deliver interoperable, resilient communications that support both civilian use and defense needs, including battlefield communications and disaster response.

MACSAT 2.0 aligns with broader EU ambitions for space sovereignty and digital independence under initiatives like IRIS². It reinforces Luxembourg’s historic leadership in satellite communications and supports Europe’s growing role in direct-to-device innovation.
