Nigeria Partners with GalaxySpace to Launch D2D Services
Nigeria’s National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has signed an MoU with Chinese LEO satellite company GalaxySpace to roll out direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity across the country by the end of 2025. The agreement will see GalaxySpace’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites integrated into Nigeria’s telecom infrastructure, enabling standard smartphones and laptops to connect directly to satellites with no extra equipment needed.
Beyond connectivity, the deal includes technology transfer, local R&D, and CubeSat co-production, aiming to boost Nigeria’s domestic space manufacturing capabilities.
GalaxySpace currently operates a test constellation of seven LEO satellites, with plans to scale up to 1,000 satellites as part of its “Mini-Spider” network. The company has been expanding its international footprint with similar D2D partnerships in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, and last year teamed up with PCCW Global to integrate LEOsat coverage into global telecom networks.
This partnership signals a major leap for Nigeria in embracing Non-Terrestrial Networks, bridging digital divides while laying the groundwork for local satellite industry growth.
