MSSA Publishes Reference Architecture for Open, Interoperable NTNs

The Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA) has released a new Reference Architecture outlining recommendations to speed adoption of 3GPP-aligned, interoperable Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technologies. As satellite-enabled mobile services scale, MSSA aims to provide a blueprint for harmonizing satellites, ground systems, and devices to ensure consistent user experiences and seamless integration with terrestrial networks.

Developed by the MSSA Technical Committee, the document addresses full end-to-end NTN service delivery from constellation design and ground infrastructure to mobile terminals, and targets the expanding demand for high-speed, reliable and secure satellite connectivity.

Key focus areas include improving NTN performance through technical advancements, strengthening interoperability with mobile networks, defining priority use cases such as roaming and network selection, and detailing service models for NTN-based messaging, voice, data, and IoT.

Work Group Lead Jeff Snyder said the framework provides practical guidance for building scalable, standards-based NTN systems that support mass-market adoption.
