Kenya and Tanzania Strengthen Satellite Regulation Cooperation

Kenya and Tanzania are deepening regulatory cooperation on satellite communications, with the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority undertaking a two-day benchmarking visit to the Communications Authority of Kenya.

The engagement is focused on sharing regulatory experience and best practice for satellite communications, with particular attention on low Earth orbit satellite services. Discussions are covering licensing frameworks, spectrum management, compliance mechanisms and policy considerations for integrating satellite connectivity into national telecom ecosystems.

The visit comes as satellite broadband adoption accelerates across Africa, creating new challenges for national regulators. LEO constellations operate across borders, making issues such as interference management, authorisation and enforcement harder to address through purely domestic frameworks.

By comparing approaches, the two regulators are seeking to reduce policy risk and build stronger coordination channels for cross-border satellite regulation. This is especially important as more international LEO operators enter African markets and governments look to balance connectivity expansion with national oversight.
