170 Operator–Satellite NTN Partnerships in 80 Countries - GSA

Satellite connectivity is continuing its shift from niche to mainstream, according to new data from the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA). As of August 2025, there are 170 publicly announced operator–satellite partnerships across 80 countries and territories, with 34 operators in 25 markets having already launched commercial services.

GSA’s latest report, Non-Terrestrial 5G Networks and Satellite Connectivity (September 2025), provides detailed maps, charts, and breakdowns of spectrum usage, vendor activity, and partnership status by region. The report highlights that Starlink leads the landscape with 44 partnerships, followed by AST SpaceMobile and Lynk. While Ka-band remains the most widely used frequency for both feeder and service links, L- and S-bands are gaining traction, particularly for direct-to-cell applications.

Rural and enterprise broadband dominates the market, accounting for around half of all partnerships. But direct-to-cell services are quickly expanding: 12 launches and 24 trials or licensed projects are already underway, enabling unmodified smartphones to connect in remote areas. IoT applications are also emerging, albeit at a slower pace.

Joe Barrett, President of the GSA, said the findings underscore “an evolving landscape where satellite services are moving from niche to mainstream, with strong growth expected in broadband and direct-to-cell offerings, and slower but steady expansion in IoT applications.”

A free executive summary is available to all registered users of the GSA website, and GSA Members and Associates can download the exclusive Member-only report and detailed annex of Operators’ satellite partnerships. Non-members can also purchase the report.
