GCT Semiconductor Signs Reference Platform Deal to Support Satellite 5G Devices

GCT Semiconductor has signed a reference platform agreement with an unnamed major satellite communications provider to accelerate development of next-generation user equipment for 5G non-terrestrial networks.

The deal builds on a chipset licensing agreement announced earlier this year and will see GCT provide a reference design based on its 5G and 4G chipsets. The platform is intended to help OEM and ODM partners bring satellite-capable devices to market more quickly, supporting high-bandwidth connectivity across both terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.

Reference platforms play a key role in shortening development cycles by giving device manufacturers a validated baseline design, reducing the need for custom integration work at the chipset level. In the NTN context, this is particularly important as vendors work to adapt conventional cellular hardware for satellite environments.

While the satellite partner has not been named, the agreement points to growing demand for chipset-level solutions that support dual terrestrial and satellite connectivity, especially as operators expand beyond messaging into higher-speed data services.

The move positions GCT within the NTN econsystem’s increasingly competitive silicon market, where vendors are working to enable scalable, standards-based device support ahead of broader commercial rollouts.
