GCT Licenses 5G Chipsets to Major Satellite Operator for D2D Push

GCT Semiconductor has signed a licensing agreement with one of the world’s largest satellite communications providers, paving the way for new direct-to-satellite and hybrid terrestrial–satellite devices.

Under the deal, GCT’s 4G and 5G chipsets will be integrated into the satellite operator’s user equipment, enabling global, resilient, high-bandwidth connectivity across both space and ground networks. The agreement also creates a pathway for future chipset sales, with the operator planning to use GCT’s newly released 5G chipset to support direct-to-satellite applications as its network expands.

Shipments of the 5G products tied to the partnership are expected to begin as early as the second half of this year. GCT says its non-terrestrial connectivity expertise and proprietary mode-switching capabilities are designed to overcome performance limitations seen in earlier generations of satellite-enabled devices, supporting the industry’s broader move toward unified terrestrial–satellite networks.
