Bahrain Regulator Starts Consultation on Direct-to-Device Satellite Services

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Bahrain has launched a public consultation to explore the introduction of Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite connectivity, a move that would allow standard mobile phones to connect directly to satellites when out of terrestrial network range.

The proposal marks a significant step in Bahrain’s ambition to remain one of the world’s best-connected nations, extending coverage to remote areas and strengthening national resilience during network disruptions.

Under the proposed framework, mobile network operators could partner with satellite providers to deliver emergency SMS, low-speed data, and later, voice services through seamless network switching. The TRA has invited operators, industry stakeholders, and the public to provide feedback on the consultation paper available on its website.

The initiative builds on Bahrain’s nationwide 4G and 5G coverage and underscores its commitment to reliable, secure, and inclusive digital infrastructure.
