Astronomical SpaceX IPO Shows Starlink Subscriber, Revenue Growth and Lofty Ambitions

We will compete to be the preferred connectivity experience to our customers no matter where they are located, whether in rural, suburban, or urban areas.” - SpaceX IPO Filing

SpaceX’s trillion-dollar IPO filing has offered the first (semi-)detailed look at Starlink’s scale, revealing 10.3 million paid subscriptions in Q1, more than double the 5 million reported a year earlier.

According to a report in PC Mag, the figure refers to paid Starlink service lines rather than individual users. That includes residential, roaming and business subscriptions, but excludes managed enterprise and government contracts across areas such as aviation, maritime, mobility and public sector services.

The filing also shows how Starlink’s rapid international expansion is affecting revenue mix. While paid subscriptions increased sharply, average revenue per user fell to $66 per month in Q1, down from $86 a year earlier, reflecting growth in lower-priced international plans and broader market expansion.

SpaceX’s connectivity business, driven primarily by Starlink, generated $11.3 billion in revenue last year, accounting for around 60% of the company’s total revenue. Operating income from the segment reached $4.4 billion, up 120% year on year, underlining Starlink’s growing importance inside the wider SpaceX business.

The filing also provides fresh detail on Starlink Mobile, SpaceX’s satellite-to-phone service delivered through carrier partners including T-Mobile. The service is now powering 7.4 million monthly unique devices across roughly 30 countries, while the company’s mobile connectivity business reportedly generated $632 million last year.

Despite Starlink’s momentum, SpaceX remains loss-making overall, recording a net loss of nearly $4.3 billion in Q1 and $4.9 billion for 2025. The company is continuing to reduce hardware costs, citing a 59% reduction in the average manufacturing cost of a Starlink kit since 2022.

The disclosure positions Starlink as one of the largest commercial satellite connectivity businesses globally, with SpaceX estimating an $870 billion addressable market for the service. It also highlights the strategic importance of Starlink Mobile as satellite-to-phone connectivity moves from early roaming and messaging use cases toward broader integration with terrestrial mobile networks.
