AccelerComm Joins ESA Programme to Develop Orbital Regenerative 5G NTN Base Station
AccelerComm has been selected for an ESA-funded programme to help develop a regenerative 5G NTN gNodeB demonstrator for LEO satellite networks, working alongside Antwerp Space.
The project, part of ESA’s Space for 5G/6G & Sustainable Connectivity programme under ARTES, will explore placing full 5G base-station functionality onboard satellites rather than using conventional transparent “bent-pipe” payloads. The target is a TRL 5 demonstrator capable of supporting multiple simultaneous users under representative satellite channel conditions.
AccelerComm will provide the Layer 1 physical-layer processing for the activity, including technology intended to deliver standards-aligned 5G performance within the power and processing constraints of a spacecraft. The demonstrator will also examine features such as beam hopping, dynamic user behaviour and intelligent power allocation.
The work reflects a wider industry shift toward regenerative NTN architectures, where more radio and network processing is performed in orbit. This can improve flexibility and reduce dependence on terrestrial infrastructure, but it also increases demands on onboard compute, power management and waveform processing.
The programme is also expected to align with newer 3GPP NTN specifications, making interoperability with terrestrial 5G networks a central part of the design. AccelerComm says its technology is already deployed across more than 300 commercial satellites, and the ESA project could provide a route toward broader commercial, sovereign-connectivity and defence-related regenerative NTN deployments.
