Vodafone Ireland Tests Satellite Connectivity for Emergency Services Resilience
Vodafone Ireland and the Irish Government have successfully tested direct-to-device satellite connectivity as part of efforts to strengthen emergency communications during network outages, severe weather events and in remote locations.
The trial, conducted in partnership with the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO), demonstrated how low Earth orbit satellite connectivity can be integrated with terrestrial mobile networks to support mission-critical communications for emergency and public service organisations.
A live test call was completed on Clare Island, off Ireland’s west coast, using AST SpaceMobile’s satellite network through Satellite Connect Europe, the joint venture between Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile. The call was carried out using a standard smartphone, highlighting the potential for satellite-enabled voice and data services without requiring specialist equipment.
The demonstration forms part of a broader programme exploring how direct-to-device satellite technology could support emergency responders when terrestrial networks are unavailable or compromised. Potential applications include maintaining access to emergency services, supporting police, fire and ambulance organisations, and improving communications resilience during major incidents or natural disasters.
Clare Island has become a key test location for Vodafone's satellite connectivity programme, having also hosted Ireland's first mobile video call over satellite earlier this year. The island's challenging terrain and limited connectivity make it a useful environment for evaluating next-generation communications technologies under real-world conditions.
The trial reflects growing interest across Europe in the role satellite-to-mobile services could play in public safety networks. While most direct-to-device announcements have focused on consumer messaging and coverage expansion, emergency services are increasingly being viewed as one of the most compelling long-term use cases for the technology.
