VMO2 to Switch on Satellite-to-Mobile Service for iPhone Users

Virgin Media O2 is extending its O2 Satellite service to iPhone users from May 28, increasing the reach of its new D2D offering across the UK.

Compatible iPhones will be able to connect to the O2 network via satellite when cellular coverage is unavailable, supporting messaging and data across apps including Apple Maps, WhatsApp and Messenger. The service runs automatically in the background, switching to satellite only when needed.

The move builds on the initial launch of O2 Satellite earlier this year and is expected to bring the service to millions more users. Virgin Media O2 said the addition of satellite connectivity has increased its geographic coverage to around 95% of the UK landmass, helping to address long-standing rural and coastal coverage gaps.

As with other D2D deployments, the service is positioned as a complement to the terrestrial network, providing a fallback layer in remote areas and during outages. The pricing model includes a £3 per month add-on for most customers, with inclusion in higher-tier plans.
