Terrestar Picks BroadForward for Secure Satellite-Cellular Signalling Infrastructure

BroadForward has deployed its Diameter Routing Agent/Edge Agent (DRA/DEA) and Diameter Firewall in Canadian operator Terrestar Solutions' satellite network, enabling secure signalling between terrestrial mobile operators and Terrestar's non-terrestrial network infrastructure.

The deployment supports the routing and authentication processes needed for mobile and IoT devices to access satellite services through existing cellular network arrangements. It uses BroadForward's BFX Unified Signaling Core, providing Diameter-based 4G interworking and a platform that can evolve towards 5G Standalone and future direct-to-device NTN services.

Terrestar is already offering hybrid satellite-cellular IoT connectivity for industrial and agricultural applications, following the launch of its Hybrid IoT platform in February 2026. The company is also developing consumer direct-to-mobile services, including two-way messaging and emergency alerts, although these remain part of its future service roadmap.

The signalling infrastructure is intended to support interoperability with Canadian mobile networks and roaming partners, allowing satellite connectivity to extend coverage into remote areas where terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable. Potential applications include asset tracking, agricultural monitoring, logistics and energy operations, alongside future consumer communications.
