TELUS and AST SpaceMobile Complete First Satellite-to-Smartphone Network Integration Test

TELUS and AST SpaceMobile have completed their first integration test between the Canadian operator's terrestrial mobile network and AST SpaceMobile's LEO satellite system, demonstrating broadband data, voice and text connectivity directly to conventional smartphones.

The test represents a step towards TELUS introducing satellite coverage in parts of Canada beyond the reach of terrestrial cell towers. The companies expect the technology to become available to eligible TELUS customers within the next year, although commercial availability will depend on further network integration and deployment.

AST SpaceMobile's architecture is designed to operate as a space-based extension of existing cellular networks, connecting standard smartphones without requiring dedicated satellite terminals. TELUS plans to use the service to supplement its 5G and LTE infrastructure, particularly across highways, wilderness areas and remote and northern communities.

Potential applications include access to 9-1-1 and other emergency communications outside terrestrial coverage, as well as connectivity for workers in industries such as energy, natural resources, construction and forestry. Satellite coverage could also provide an additional communications layer when terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable or disrupted.

The integration adds TELUS to the growing number of mobile operators moving AST SpaceMobile technology from demonstrations towards commercial deployment. In Canada, it also establishes another route to D2D satellite coverage alongside Bell's work with AST SpaceMobile, illustrating how satellite connectivity is increasingly being integrated directly into established mobile networks rather than offered as a separate service.
