Starlink Mobile Unveils Plans to Compete with US MNOs
SpaceX yesterday outlined its ambitions in the mobile market on its first post-IPO quarterly earnings call, revealing plans to transform Starlink Mobile into a full-service wireless operator capable of competing directly with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.
Executives outlined a strategy that moves far beyond using satellites to eliminate mobile dead zones. Instead, the company intends to build a hybrid terrestrial and satellite network capable of delivering nationwide mobile connectivity while selling services directly to consumers.
Until now, Starlink's direct-to-cell technology has largely been positioned as a complementary service. Through partnerships with operators such as T-Mobile, compatible smartphones can connect directly to Starlink satellites when they move outside terrestrial network coverage.
However, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell told investors that the long-term objective is considerably more ambitious.
The company plans to combine its expanding low Earth orbit satellite constellation with terrestrial radio infrastructure built using the 65 MHz of spectrum acquired through EchoStar. Future Starlink Mobile satellites, expected from 2027 onwards, are designed to deliver dramatically greater network capacity than today's direct-to-cell service.
According to SpaceX, the terrestrial component will use compact cellular base stations connected via Starlink backhaul, creating a highly distributed architecture that could be deployed more quickly and at lower cost than conventional macro-cell networks.
CEO Elon Musk argued that this hybrid approach has the potential to outperform existing mobile networks by combining ubiquitous satellite coverage with dense terrestrial capacity, effectively eliminating traditional coverage gaps.
