ST Engineering iDirect Announces 5G NTN Integration PoC
ST Engineering iDirect has announced a proof of concept showing its ground systems can interoperate directly with the 5G Core using its Interworking Gateway Function. In practice, this means a non-3GPP satellite link can connect smoothly into the broader 5G ecosystem while appearing fully compliant with mobile standards.
The PoC also proved inter-provider roaming between satellite and terrestrial networks, a crucial capability for expanding coverage and opening new revenue opportunities. For end users, it translates into seamless connectivity and consistent application performance, whether on land or in orbit.
“This proof of concept demonstrates how we’re making our hybrid strategy a reality,” said Sridhar Kuppanna, CTO of ST Engineering iDirect. “Our goal is to build a unified satcom network that lets operators protect today’s investments while transitioning to scalable 5G NTN.”
The company says upcoming work will extend to satellite-optimized gNodeB technology, 5G NR access, and hybrid modems that can switch between terrestrial and satellite networks on the fly—laying the groundwork for a standardized 5G-6G future.
