Space42 and Skylo Test D2D SMS and SOS Services in UAE Over Thuraya-4

Space42 and Skylo Technologies have said that they have successfully tested direct-to-device (D2D) SMS and SOS services in the UAE, demonstrating two-way messaging over the Thuraya-4 geostationary satellite using standard Android smartphones and no additional hardware.

The trial used Skylo's 3GPP-compliant non-terrestrial network (NTN) platform, allowing messages to be delivered through existing SIM credentials and operator infrastructure. The companies said the demonstration confirms that carrier-grade satellite messaging can be integrated into mobile networks without changes to core network architecture.

For mobile operators, the approach provides a standards-based way to extend SMS and emergency messaging into areas beyond terrestrial coverage, including deserts, mountains and maritime regions. For users, it enables satellite connectivity using existing smartphones rather than dedicated satellite devices.

The successful testing builds on the companies' partnership around Thuraya-4, with commercial rollout of D2D messaging expected later this year, subject to regulatory approvals. Space42 and Skylo are also developing additional services on the same NTN platform, including location sharing, IoT connectivity, application data services and automotive communications.
