SoftBank Launches Starlink Direct-to-Device Service Across Japan
SoftBank Corp. has launched a new satellite-to-mobile service, “SoftBank Starlink Direct”, which enables customers to connect directly to Starlink satellites in areas without terrestrial coverage across Japan.
The service, which went live on April 10th, allows users on SoftBank, Y!mobile and LINEMO plans to access messaging, data and emergency communications via low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. It is designed to provide coverage in remote environments such as mountainous regions and offshore areas, where traditional mobile networks are difficult to deploy.
SoftBank confirmed that 82 compatible devices are already supported, with the service offered at no additional cost to customers on eligible plans. Beyond basic connectivity, selected digital services from within SoftBank’s ecosystem — including messaging, payments and web platforms — will also be gradually enabled over the satellite link.
The launch follows extensive field testing to validate performance, including message delivery, network behaviour and communication speeds, indicating a level of operational readiness beyond early-stage trials.
The announcement highlights several important developments in the NTN market:
Commercial service activation: Direct-to-device connectivity is moving from pilot phases into live, customer-facing deployments
Ecosystem integration: Satellite links are beginning to support not just basic messaging, but platform services such as apps and payments
Mass device compatibility: Support for dozens of smartphones signals growing alignment with standard consumer hardware
The move reinforces SoftBank’s approach of using NTN as a complementary coverage layer, extending connectivity rather than replacing terrestrial infrastructure. The inclusion of emergency communications also underlines the role of satellite connectivity in improving network resilience during disasters, a key consideration in the Japanese market.
