Project Kuiper Becomes Amazon Leo - Marking Next Phase of Global LEO Network
Amazon has officially rebranded its Project Kuiper satellite program as Amazon Leo, reflecting its low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation that will deliver high-speed broadband connectivity worldwide. The change marks the program’s transition from development to commercial deployment as one of the most advanced satellite communications systems ever built.
Launched seven years ago, the initiative aims to close connectivity gaps for billions of people and organizations operating beyond the reach of terrestrial networks. Amazon Leo now has more than 150 satellites in orbit following six successful launches, with plans for over 80 missions to complete its initial constellation.
The network will provide fast, reliable broadband to consumers, enterprises, and government customers through a combination of custom-built satellites, user terminals, and ground infrastructure. Amazon Leo has already signed early commercial agreements with partners including JetBlue, L3Harris, DIRECTV Latin America, Sky Brasil, and NBN Co. (Australia).
The rebrand also highlights Amazon’s growing investment in its global space operations, which now include one of the world’s largest satellite production lines and a proprietary phased array antenna supporting gigabit speeds. As the company expands coverage and capacity, commercial service activation will begin once sufficient constellation density is achieved.
Amazon Leo’s mission remains unchanged: to extend affordable, high-speed connectivity to unserved and underserved communities worldwide, bridging the gap between terrestrial and space-based networks at global scale.
