OQ Technology Launches ERMIS Satellites to Advance European 5G NTN and D2D
OQ Technology has announced that it has successfully launched two new satellites, ERMIS-1 and ERMIS-2, as part of its growing low Earth orbit constellation aimed at delivering 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) and direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity.
Deployed aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-16 mission, the CubeSats will now enter in-orbit testing, supporting a broader European initiative to strengthen sovereign satellite communications capabilities. Built by OQ Technology’s Greek subsidiary, OQ Technology Hellas, the satellites form part of the ERMIS programme, backed by the European Space Agency and Greek national institutions.
The satellites are equipped with 5G NTN payloads designed to enable IoT connectivity and direct-to-smartphone services, including emergency broadcast messaging. OQ Technology has already demonstrated D2D messaging from space, and the ERMIS mission is expected to further validate capabilities such as two-way communication and, eventually, voice services on unmodified devices.
Beyond connectivity, the satellites are also intended to support applications including disaster response, public warning systems and maritime safety, all areas where satellite-based coverage can provide critical resilience when terrestrial networks are unavailable.
