NTT Docomo's Starlink Direct Tops 5 Million Users in First Two Months

NTT Docomo says more than five million users have connected to its Docomo Starlink Direct service just over two months after its launch, highlighting growing consumer adoption of direct-to-device satellite connectivity in Japan.

Launched in late April, the service uses SpaceX's Starlink Mobile network to provide satellite messaging, location sharing and app-based data services when terrestrial coverage is unavailable, including in mountainous regions, remote islands and at sea. It is available free of charge to customers across all Docomo mobile plans without requiring a separate subscription.

The milestone underscores how operators are increasingly positioning satellite connectivity as an extension of their existing mobile networks rather than a premium standalone service. By making the capability available across its subscriber base, Docomo is using D2D satellite communications to improve everyday coverage while also strengthening network resilience during emergencies and natural disasters.

Docomo said it is also supporting nationwide adoption through its retail stores, helping customers check device compatibility and configure satellite connectivity. The operator said the service forms part of its broader strategy to provide connectivity "anytime, anywhere" while improving safety and reliability for mobile users.
