New 5G Satellite Test Connects Singapore and Japan Over GEO

An international research team led by the Singapore University of Technology and Design has successfully demonstrated a world-first end-to-end 5G satellite link between Singapore and Japan using an existing geostationary satellite. In partnership with SKY Perfect JSAT, TMYTEK, Rohde & Schwarz, and VIAVI, the test proved that standard mobile phones could one day achieve real-time connectivity in remote areas like oceans or Antarctica—paving the way for 6G networks that merge satellite and terrestrial coverage. The demonstration also marked one of the first uses of an electronically steered antenna in 5G GEO NTN communications.
