Namibia Looks to Angola’s Angosat-2 for Rural Connectivity and Mobile Backhaul

Namibia is working with Angola to explore the use of the Angosat-2 satellite to extend communications services into remote areas and improve the resilience of its national telecom infrastructure.

The initiative brings together Telecom Namibia and Angola’s Space Management Office (GGPEN), with support from Namibia’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology. The partnership will assess how satellite capacity can support broadband, voice services and network backhaul in areas where terrestrial infrastructure is limited or costly to deploy.

Discussions began in June 2025 and have included plans for a proof of concept to evaluate Angosat-2’s technical performance and suitability for Namibia’s connectivity requirements. Particular attention is being given to rural broadband provision and the use of satellite links to strengthen Telecom Namibia’s existing network.

Angosat-2 is a geostationary high-throughput satellite providing C-, Ku- and Ka-band connectivity across Africa and parts of Europe. Its capacity can support fixed broadband services and satellite backhaul, allowing telecom operators to connect remote network sites without relying entirely on terrestrial fibre or microwave infrastructure.

For Namibia, satellite backhaul provides a practical way to extend mobile and broadband coverage into sparsely populated regions while improving network redundancy. Although the project is not a direct-to-device NTN deployment, it illustrates the continuing role of conventional satellite infrastructure in supporting terrestrial mobile networks.

The partnership also forms part of Angola’s wider efforts to make Angosat-2 capacity available across the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Angola has been exploring regional satellite connectivity partnerships as neighbouring countries look for alternatives to expensive terrestrial infrastructure expansion.
