Mozambique Telecom Begins ANGOSAT-2 Satellite Connectivity Trials

Moçambique Telecom (TMCEL) has begun proof-of-concept trials using the ANGOSAT-2 satellite, as Mozambique and Angola look to turn regional space cooperation into practical telecommunications services.

The trials will assess whether capacity from Angola’s satellite can be used to support telecom services in Mozambique. They follow cooperation agreements signed between the two countries in June covering space and communications.

The project builds on earlier ANGOSAT-2 trials with Televisão de Moçambique, which tested distribution of the public broadcaster’s signal via satellite. Those tests produced positive results, with the parties now preparing to move toward a commercial agreement for nationwide broadcast distribution.

With TMCEL entering the testing phase, ANGOSAT-2 is expanding its role beyond Angola as a regional connectivity platform. The satellite could support telecom and broadcasting operators across Mozambique and other Southern African markets where terrestrial infrastructure remains limited or uneven.

The initiative also aligns with Angola’s wider strategy to commercialise ANGOSAT-2 capacity across the Southern African Development Community region. For Mozambique, the trials could add another route for extending communications coverage, improving service resilience and supporting national connectivity goals.
