Momentus has secured a contract with OQ Technology to host a 5G Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) payload aboard its Vigoride-9 orbital service vehicle, with launch scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027. The mission will support the expansion of OQ Technology's existing satellite IoT network, providing additional capacity and coverage for commercial and government customers.
The hosted payload will comprise an antenna, feeder board and communications electronics integrated into the Vigoride spacecraft. Once deployed in orbit, the system is intended to communicate directly with compatible IoT terminals, supporting satellite connectivity for devices operating beyond terrestrial cellular coverage.
OQ Technology is developing a standards-based 5G NB-IoT satellite network targeting applications such as asset tracking, logistics, industrial monitoring and remote infrastructure management. The additional payload is intended to strengthen its existing constellation by increasing available network capacity and extending service coverage for customers requiring connectivity in remote or underserved locations.
The Vigoride-9 deployment will use a hosted payload architecture, allowing OQ Technology to operate communications equipment aboard a third-party spacecraft rather than developing and launching a dedicated satellite. This approach can reduce spacecraft development requirements and provide a more flexible route to deploying additional network capabilities, particularly for smaller payloads and targeted capacity expansion.
The payload is expected to operate for several months following launch, making the mission a time-limited addition to OQ Technology's satellite infrastructure rather than a permanent constellation expansion. Its contribution to network performance will depend on the final orbital configuration, operational availability and successful integration with OQ Technology's existing systems.
