The countdown is on to MNIS:NTN, a free-to-attend virtual event taking place on 3–4 November 2026, organised by the team from the Mobile Network Innovation Summit. Bringing together leading voices from across the telecoms and satellite industries, the event will explore the opportunities, challenges and commercial realities shaping the convergence of terrestrial and NTN.
In the run-up to the event, we're taking a closer look at the six sessions which make up the two-day programme, highlighting topics and introducing the industry experts who will be sharing their perspectives. To register visit – https://www.mnis-ntn.com
Session Six – NTN Spectrum: One Year Out from WRC-27, How Is the Industry Tackling Global Spectrum Needs?
Wednesday 4 November – 11:00–12:00 GMT
With the ITU's World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27) now less than a year away, the question of how the industry manages its growing spectrum requirements is becoming increasingly important for the future of non-terrestrial networks. As satellite constellations expand, D2D connectivity gathers momentum and terrestrial and satellite networks become more closely integrated, demand for radio spectrum is intensifying. But spectrum is a finite resource, and balancing the needs of different technologies, operators and services presents some significant technical, commercial and regulatory challenges.
WRC-27 will provide an important opportunity for governments and industry stakeholders to address some of these issues, with discussions around satellite spectrum allocations, coexistence with terrestrial mobile networks and the regulatory frameworks needed to support emerging connectivity services.
But with competing interests, different regional priorities and an increasingly complex communications landscape, finding common ground will be far from straightforward. How can the industry ensure satellite and terrestrial networks have access to the spectrum they need? What progress is being made on international harmonisation? And what needs to happen between now and WRC-27 to support the next generation of NTN services?
These are among the questions at the heart of the sixth and final session of MNIS:NTN, which brings together three experts representing the satellite industry, national regulation and the wider mobile ecosystem.
Introducing the speakers:
· Peng Zhao, Vice-President, Policy & Regulatory, GSOA
· Alex Dixon, Head Spectrum Technical Authorisation, Spectrum Group, Ofcom
· Carol Sosa Leguizamon, Director, Spectrum Policy, GSMA
With perspectives from a global satellite industry association, the UK's communications regulator and the organisation representing the worldwide mobile ecosystem, the session promises an informed discussion about the spectrum priorities that will help shape the future of NTN.
From international coordination and spectrum sharing to regulatory developments and the growing convergence of satellite and terrestrial services, there'll be plenty to explore as the industry prepares for WRC-27.
MNIS:NTN takes place online on 3–4 November 2026, and registration is free. Sessions will also be available on demand after the event, so registered attendees can catch up on any discussions they cannot join live.
