Mercantile Space to Bring Rivada's Outernet to Nepal
Nepalese operator Mercantile Space has partnered with Rivada Space Networks to bring its Outernet secure low Earth orbit (LEO) connectivity platform to Nepal, targeting government and enterprise customers that require resilient, high-security communications.
The agreement will see Mercantile integrate Rivada's planned 600-satellite optical mesh network into its connectivity portfolio. Unlike conventional LEO systems that rely on terrestrial gateways, Rivada's architecture routes traffic entirely through inter-satellite laser links until it reaches its destination, a design intended to improve security, reduce latency over long distances and support data sovereignty requirements.
For Nepal, where mountainous terrain can make terrestrial fibre deployment challenging, the partnership aims to extend high-capacity connectivity to remote and underserved locations while providing an additional layer of resilience for critical communications infrastructure.
The companies are targeting sectors including government, defence, banking and telecommunications, where secure data transport is becoming increasingly important. Mercantile said the partnership will strengthen its ability to offer sovereign connectivity and carrier-grade resilience, while Rivada continues to build commercial momentum for its Outernet constellation, which the company says has secured more than US$20 billion in business commitments globally.
