Kratos Demos Multi-Vendor 5G NR-NTN Connectivity Using Virtualised Ground System

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has demonstrated end-to-end connectivity across a multi-vendor 5G New Radio Non-Terrestrial Network (NR-NTN) using its OpenSpace virtualised satellite ground system, in collaboration with Korean satellite operator KT SAT and technology partners.

The demonstration integrated Kratos' OpenSpace Radio Access Network with Druid Software's Raemis 5G Core and a GCT Semiconductor GDM7275X-based user device. The system successfully performed cell search, registered the device with the 5G core and established two-way communication, validating interoperability between components from different suppliers.

OpenSpace uses a software-defined architecture designed to reduce dependence on dedicated ground hardware and allow satellite operators to deploy and scale network functions more flexibly. The approach could enable operators to select different technology suppliers according to regional coverage, capacity requirements and operating costs, rather than relying on a single integrated equipment vendor.
