Iridium, Deutsche Telekom IoT and Toyota Demo Voice Messaging over NB-IoT

Iridium and Deutsche Telekom IoT have demonstrated voice messaging over Iridium NTN Direct from a Toyota vehicle, following completion of technical integration and a global roaming agreement between the two companies.

The demonstration, conducted during Telekom Satellite Day 2026, used a Toyota vehicle equipped with a Nordic Semiconductor nRF9151 development board and Deutsche Telekom IoT SIM. The voice message was transmitted over Iridium's existing L-band LEO constellation using standards-based NB-IoT rather than a dedicated proprietary satellite terminal.

The trial also used Fraunhofer IIS's NESC AI-based voice codec, which operates at bitrates of 1 kbps or below. This allows compressed speech to be carried over narrowband satellite links, potentially extending voice-related applications to vehicles and IoT equipment outside terrestrial coverage.

More importantly commercially, Iridium and Deutsche Telekom IoT have completed a global roaming agreement. Compatible NB-IoT devices using Deutsche Telekom's connectivity will be able to move between terrestrial networks and Iridium NTN Direct, with selected European customers already testing applications using Deutsche Telekom's Global SIM. Commercial availability of Iridium NTN Direct is targeted for Q4 2026.

The arrangement illustrates a different route to NTN deployment from D2D systems using mobile operators' terrestrial spectrum. Iridium is adapting its already operational global L-band satellite network to support standardized NTN devices, potentially allowing operators and IoT providers to add satellite coverage through roaming arrangements rather than deploying their own satellite infrastructure.
