Deutsche Telekom Adds Iridium to Multi-Orbit Satellite IoT Roaming Service
Deutsche Telekom IoT has added Iridium's LEO network to its multi-orbit roaming portfolio, allowing compatible NB-IoT devices using Deutsche Telekom's Global SIM to switch to satellite connectivity when terrestrial mobile coverage is unavailable.
The agreement expands Deutsche Telekom's satellite ecosystem, which now includes Iridium, Sateliot and OQ Technology for LEO connectivity and Skylo for GEO-based services. The operator is positioning these networks alongside terrestrial cellular coverage as a "network of networks", giving IoT customers access to different satellite architectures through a common roaming model.
Technical integration and the global roaming agreement between Deutsche Telekom IoT and Iridium have been completed, with Iridium NTN Direct now commercially available to eligible Deutsche Telekom IoT customers. Initial support is focused on compatible NB-IoT devices using Nordic Semiconductor modules with the required firmware, while selected European IoT providers have begun testing applications with Deutsche Telekom's Global SIM.
The companies also demonstrated the integration using a Toyota vehicle, which transmitted a compressed voice message over Iridium's L-band satellite network using a Nordic Semiconductor nRF9151 development board and Deutsche Telekom IoT SIM. Fraunhofer IIS's NESC codec compressed the speech for transmission over the low-bandwidth NB-IoT connection, illustrating how standards-based satellite IoT could support limited voice as well as conventional telemetry.
The addition of Iridium broadens Deutsche Telekom's commercial multi-orbit NTN roaming strategy rather than tying its IoT service to a single satellite network. For customers deploying vehicles, industrial equipment and other connected assets internationally, the model could allow terrestrial cellular, GEO and multiple LEO networks to operate as complementary connectivity layers while retaining a common SIM and service relationship.
