Cobham Satcom and Gatehouse Satcom Merge for 5G NTN Infrastructure Powerhouse
Cobham Satcom and Gatehouse Satcom have announced a strategic merger that creates one of the satellite industry’s strongest dedicated players yet in 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) infrastructure. The deal combines Cobham’s network and ground-segment capabilities with Gatehouse’s leading 3GPP-compliant 5G NTN software stack, used across LEO, MEO and GEO systems.
The merged entity will operate as a Cobham Satcom subsidiary, led by Gatehouse CEO Kenney Schmidt Christiansen. Its mandate:
deliver integrated 5G NTN network platforms,
strengthen interoperability between satellite and terrestrial networks, and
accelerate the roadmap toward standardized 5G/6G NTN services, including D2D.
The move reflects rising operator demand for 5G-NTN-ready systems as constellation builders prepare for commercial broadband, IoT, mobility, and direct-to-device services.
The merger pairs:
Cobham Satcom’s expertise in RAN platforms, terminals, and ground infrastructure (SAILOR, Sea Tel, EXPLORER, TRACKER), and
Gatehouse Satcom’s widely adopted 5G NTN waveform, protocol, and test software.
The deal is pending regulatory approval.
