Banglalink Launches Starlink Direct-to-Device Service in Bangladesh
VEON's Banglalink has launched Starlink satellite-to-mobile connectivity in Bangladesh, becoming the first operator in South Asia to introduce the service. The deployment allows customers to access selected applications and location services on compatible 4G smartphones outside conventional terrestrial mobile coverage.
The service uses Starlink's direct-to-device satellite network to extend Banglalink's existing cellular footprint without requiring dedicated satellite terminals. Customers need a compatible 4G handset and Banglalink SIM, with service access available through the operator's MyBL application and planned integration into its youth-focused RYZE platform.
Banglalink is positioning the satellite layer primarily as a network resilience and coverage extension service, particularly during cyclones, flooding, prolonged power outages and other disruptions to terrestrial infrastructure. Potential applications include emergency communications, maritime connectivity for fishing communities and access to basic digital services in remote areas.
The launch follows VEON's earlier Starlink satellite-to-mobile deployments through Kyivstar in Ukraine in 2025 and Beeline Kazakhstan in September 2026. Bangladesh becomes the group's third market to introduce the technology, extending its satellite connectivity strategy across Europe, Central Asia and South Asia.
