Andorra Telecom Launches Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite
Andorra Telecom has activated Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite service, allowing users of compatible iPhones and Apple Watches to contact emergency services when outside the reach of cellular and Wi-Fi networks.
The service is available on iPhone 14 and later models, as well as Apple Watch Ultra 3. When a user dials the European emergency number 112 without terrestrial coverage, the device connects via satellite and guides the user through a short questionnaire before transmitting key incident details to emergency responders.
The capability has been integrated with Andorra's national emergency response infrastructure in partnership with the Department of Fire Prevention, Extinction and Rescue (DPEIS), making it available to both residents and visitors using supported Apple devices.
The rollout is particularly relevant for Andorra's mountainous terrain, where mobile coverage can be limited during outdoor activities. It also forms part of the country's broader modernisation of emergency communications ahead of the planned National Emergency Centre, with Andorra Telecom indicating that similar satellite-based emergency services from other device manufacturers could be incorporated in the future.
