Alén Space Delivers ETRISat to South Korea Ahead of Launch on KSLV-II
Spanish smallsat specialist Alén Space has completed and delivered ETRISat, a 6U CubeSat built for South Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). The satellite, now in-country and preparing for launch aboard a Nuri (KSLV-II) rocket from the Naro Space Center, will support South Korea’s push into next-generation satellite and maritime communications.
The mission’s core objective is to conduct in-orbit demonstrations (IOD) of advanced communications technologies being developed by ETRI, with a major focus on ocean and climate monitoring.
At the heart of ETRISat is Alén Space’s TREVO software-defined radio (SDR), which will run two independent applications: ETRI’s own experimental communications payload and an Alén Space module dedicated to receiving and relaying AIS (Automatic Identification System) signals used in maritime traffic management. The flexible dual-payload setup allows ETRI to test its innovations on a proven platform while adding operational value through AIS support.
Alén Space delivered the mission as a turnkey end-to-end project, covering design, assembly, testing, Mission Control Software (MCS) deployment, and initial in-orbit operations. The company highlighted that close collaboration with ETRI and lessons learned from previous missions helped accelerate development timelines.
The launch will mark the fourth flight of South Korea’s Nuri launcher, and the first since the creation of the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) in 2024.
